Bergisch Gladbach sits exactly on the edge where the Rhineland ends and the Bergisches Land begins — the Königsforst to the south, hills and stream valleys to the east.
The town grew rich on a brook: along its barely nineteen kilometres the Strunde drove so many mills that fifty-one were counted around 1846, thirty-six of them running at the same time. Today you have the forest within walking distance and central Cologne about twenty minutes away.
